We have just 1 day left in Brisbane before we jet off to the Solomon Islands for 6 weeks and we still have a lot to do.
We each have to prepare our testimony and two sermons and finish our workbooks. Sermons were a bit daunting at first but have proved to be a good exercise that myself anyway, has enjoyed.
We have been given a vague idea of where we are going within the Solomon’s and what we are doing while we are there. I will share what I know at the moment but knowing YWAM and from what I have heard of the Solomon’s...this may change!
There are two Solomon’s teams; we like to call them Solomon’s 1 and Solomon’s 2. We are Solomon’s 1. We all fly out on Tuesday 9th June to Honiara which is the capital of the Solomon Islands. The two teams are spending a week together here. There is a YWAM base here and they will be giving us information and helping us adjust to the culture. It is possible that we will be doing church services and building houses here too.
The two teams then go their separate ways, Solomons 2 go to Makira and we take the fast boat (8 -10hours - thats fast apparently) and go to Western Province (beautiful – google it) and are staying in villages and or churches and doing church ministry. The Solomon’s has a high population of young people so I would imagine we will be leading youth groups at some point also. We have two people (Judith and Michael) who are also in charge of children’s ministry; even though I'm sure we will all lend a hand.
I think we meet up with the Solomon’s 2 team in Honiara for the last week or so before coming home on the 21st June.
The girls have had to get a whole new wardrobe for going on outreach. This may sound exciting but if you see what this consists of you would laugh. We have to wear long skirts (past the knees) and baggy t-shirts. For in the water, shorts (past the knees) and a t-shirt also. For the past few weeks there have been many trips to the "op shops" as they call them here or second hand stores to search for half decent outfits. All our fashion rules are out the window...believe me! We have found many bargains and have had a good laugh about it which is all you can do really. The guys love to make jokes about our tan lines that we will come home with and say that they will be taking many, many pictures! haha!
Just to keep the mums at ease, we have all had the required vaccinations and have Malaria tablets (Doxycycline) so we will be fine.
That’s about all I have been informed of at this present time. Any more information I get I will communicate to you.
I will be communicating via this blog during our time in the Solomon’s, but considering some of the locations we will be visiting I don’t think I will have much internet access - I will do my best. I should have internet access in Honiara.
That’s all folks. Lisa, on behalf of Solomon’s 1.
